WP1

Farms producing free-range pigs in integration with other livestock (multi-species farming), forestry (agroforestry) or with crop production will be selected by partners. These farms will thus represent very different geographical regions of Europe, and also levels of biosecurity and risk of endemic diseases, as well as fauna/flora of free-range areas will be different. A first task will be to adapt existing welfare protocols specifically for livestock in free-range systems. Next, the selected farms will form the empirical basis for assessing of health and welfare in MFS. The investigation will include interview on health management procedures and priorities with regards to animal robustness, sampling at regular intervals (depending on capacity of each partner) for health and disease over 2 years, repeated welfare assessments and recordings of diseases, including historical health data. A focus will be on any medical treatments that may interact with the surrounding environment.
